79 YOUTH VOLUNTEER GROUPS IN CZECH REPUBLIC RECEIVE CZK 2 MILLION FOR THEIR COMMUNITY PROJECTS FROM MAKE A CONNECTION PROGRAM

Prague: The Civic Society Development Foundation (Nadace rozvoje občanské společnosti – NROS) and Nokia announced today the 79 winning projects that will receive grants of almost CZK 2 million (E66,000) as part of the fourth year of the Make a Connection program in the Czech Republic. Teams of young volunteers, ages 16 to 24 from five regions of the Czech Republic and from children’s homes nationwide, will have an opportunity to implement their own projects to benefit their communities and will receive training in project management and fundraising. Projects awarded range from renovation of historical sights and environmental education to drug prevention projects and assistance for the disabled, seniors or children in children’s homes.

“Over the past three years, more than 200 projects have been supported by the Make a Connection program,” said Matti Palomäki, Managing Director of Nokia Czech Republic. “It is fascinating to see the excitement and drive the young people have to implement their projects. It shows that if they have the opportunity and support, they can have real impact in their communities.”

“Members of ‘Alumnik’, a club of program graduates, will also take part in the training courses this year,” said Hana Šilhánová, the director of NROS. “The young people who have just joined the Make a Connection program will have an opportunity to discuss their ideas and projects directly with those who have already implemented their own projects successfully.”

A two-round evaluation system was used once again for selecting the best projects out of more than 120 proposals submitted by young people. Projects within each region were examined by regional evaluation committees, which comprised of representatives of public administration, schools, media, and the non-profit and business sectors. Recommendations of the regional committees were reviewed by the principal evaluation committee, which selected the final winning projects. For the first time, members of the evaluation committees included the young people themselves – members of the Make a Connection Graduate Club.

Interested program graduates will also have the opportunity to meet their peers at the Make a Connection ”Summer Camp” at Slavonice, Southern Bohemia, from August 10 to 19, 2005. The main goal of the Summer Camp is to extend the knowledge and practical experience the young people acquired by implementing their projects and by participating in training. This year’s Summer Camp is aimed primarily at improving skills in teamwork and communication with media.
